Press Release

Lightning Pick introduces the new NW Series Wireless pick-to-Light system for picking products without traditional rack or shelving locations.

Germantown, WI – April 22, 2009: Lightning Pick, providers of paperless picking systems including the number one selling pick-to-light solution in North America today released the new Lightning Pick NW Series Wireless Pick-to-Light System. The NW Series is the first completely mobile pick-to-light technology in the market, introducing an expanded range of applications that can benefit from light-directed order picking.

In 1998 Lightning Pick introduced duct-based pick-to-light technology to the United States. These cable-free light modules retrofit to a rack, shelf, cart or other material handling storage media. The new track-lighting style hardware lowered installation costs and is more flexible for system reconfiguration, maintenance and expansion. Today cable-free displays are the industry standard, but distributors still sought after a means of applying pick-to-light speed and accuracy to operations that didn’t have the infrastructure for mounted lights.

The LP Wireless Pick-to-Light System is ideal for any temporary or mobile product locations such as totes, bins, shipping containers, pallets on open floors and others. Simply place the portable light module on or near the required product location and it’s now part of the pick-to-light operation. Bays and zones can leverage a combination of classic Lightning Pick track-mounted and wireless lights, all of which are easily configured within Lightning Pick® software.

Wireless pick-to-light is made possible by Lightning Pick’s industry-first adoption of ‘White Paper” or electronic paper technology, also used by eBooks like the Amazon Kindle. Because the light modules can retain information displays without continuous power, they remain active for long time periods between battery charges. This feature also makes the devices very energy efficient for operations pursuing ‘green’ initiatives.

White paper light modules can also present data in a number of unique ways beyond the capabilities of traditional LCD displays, including combinations of numbers, text and fully functional bar codes. This latter feature eliminates the need for paper bar code labels on product shelf or bin locations, because the lights themselves can be RF scanned for lot tracking and other specialized operations.

High contrast black characters on a white background are clear from long distances and a wide range of viewing angles. The wireless lights run on a low power radio system that requires a fraction of the energy required by traditional Wi-Fi networks. The multicolor indicator lights that direct operators to the correct product location can illuminate as red, white, blue, green, orange and turquoise.

You can see the new Wireless Pick-to-Light system live in Booth #1543 at the North American Material Handling Show (NA) 2010, April 26th – 29th at the I-X Center in Cleveland, OH. Lightning Pick will demonstrate the NW Series working with classic track-light style Lightning Pick systems and other paperless picking technologies like Voice and RF.
